Sometimes only a voice remains at first. You don’t understand every word yet, but a pause, an emphasis, or the rhythm pulls you into the track.
For us, this is a good beginning. We don’t want to replace it with a quick explanation. Whoever discovers music is allowed to listen first, without already needing to know an entire scene. Only after that does the question of context arise: Who is speaking here? Who is the text addressed to? What does the production tell us, even before a single line is explained?
A name is not a complete story.
With Russian-language rap, it’s natural to think of language and origin together. But that’s not enough for a portrait. An artist can be born in one place, live in another, and write for an audience in multiple countries. Which of these experiences shape their music must emerge from the material and the conversation.
Therefore, we do not want to decide in advance of the first interview what someone stands for. Even an impressive visual language is not proof of a biography. A music video can stage, condense, and invent roles. Our job is to not confuse that with facts.
Good contextualization gives music space. It opens up access without prescribing meaning for all.
Accuracy over promises of completeness.
A portrait cannot explain everything. But it can carefully select: a track, a biographical passage, a decision in the studio. We prefer specific observations to a broad term that says little at the end.
Wherever we take statements, we name their source. Where a translation only conveys part of a wordplay, that limitation becomes part of the explanation. And if a detail cannot be verified, a plausible assumption does not become a confirmed fact.
Sascha’s selection as an entry point.
For over 15 years, Sascha Axmann has followed rap from Russia and the post-Soviet space as a listener and supporter. His personal Instagram recommendations form the starting point for CCCP RAP. From a story archive, a new contribution is created here with an original clip, artist link, and traceable context.
The selection is aimed at people in Europe, the USA, South America, Africa, and around the world. German-language picks are also included: music can open a conversation between scenes without blurring their differences.
